Introducing the HP Business Institute

Targeting graduates with a passion for technology and existing small to medium empowered ICT enterprises, the HP Business Institute is programme run by HP to grow and develop potential in individuals and enterprises.

Launched in 2007 as a large-scale enterprise development initiative driven primarily through skills development, the HP Business Institute is at the core of HP South Africa’s Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) strategy. HP has invested significantly in B-BBEE initiatives, most notably in the form of the HP Business Institute.

As the first multinational in South Africa to receive Government approval for its equity equivalent proposal, HP is passionate about B-BBEE and believes that the local ICT sector has an important role to play in empowerment and transformation.

HP’s commitment to empowerment and transformation has been evidenced by its excellent scoring against the Department of Trade and Industry’s gazetted Codes of Good Practice. HP is currently a Level 3 Contributor to B-BBEE with a certified score of 80.55%.

Transform yourself, grow your business

The HP Business Institute consists of two core components. The first is to identify and work with existing small B-BBEE IT companies to help them grow into bigger, more profitable businesses. The second is to develop graduates; teaching them the relevant business and technical skills required to build successful careers in the IT industry. The programme therefore aims to create wealth for South Africa’s previously disadvantaged communities, making it a meaningful transformation initiative.

The HP Business Institute’s first intake of students occurred in February 2008, and since then it has launched several programmes targeted at graduates and small businesses. The focus of these programmes has been to ensure that it adds value and is relevant to both graduates as well as SMEs; focusing on developing skills in high growth areas of the industry and assisting enterprises to capitalise on market opportunities that might have been previously unattainable.

Building capacity for the future

A key driver behind the HP Business Institute is to address the lack of capacity in the ICT sector, primarily as a result of a shortage of skills. The HP Business Institute’s mission is to build sustainable capacity within small to medium IT enterprises and upskilling young graduates, and in so doing developing a pool of skilled technology resources.
